La Biennale di Venezia has become important for the arts world through both prestige and controversy. The grounds, installations, and the art contained within do more than entertain, they talk about contemporary issues. However, the festival can in many ways exclude the people whose struggles are discussed within. Venice is largely inaccessible both physically and materially. Younger cities like Calgary have the potential to use their real estate resources to bridge both prestige and accessibility. Calgary can become a hub of activity where people can connect and make moves that reach beyond the city. The new cultural buildings and the festivals that take place in Calgary do a good job of bringing our people together. They make us proud to live here, and encourage visitors. When faced with choice and sacrifice, we should continue to make decisions that promote growth, but keep our city accessible and inclusive.
